“Teaching
English as a Second Language in India: Focus on Objectives”
In this essay written by Shivendra Verma. He talking about
objective of language teaching. In this essay focus on the objective of
teaching English as a second language in India. English as a global language, Catharsis
and self-expression is most important of languages.
English as a global language but it is a single language but
all the country speak the English language. English is a “Link Language” or
“Lingua Franca”. It encourage wider mobility national
integration and a sense of tolerance.
In this essay three parts:
1. Bilingualism:ability
to communicate in two or more language.
2. Trilingualism:Ability
to communicate in three or more languages.
3.
Multilingualism: ability to communicate in many languages.
The emphasis should shift from encourage learners to
memorize paradigms and grammatical rules to helping them interact with people
using different registers of language in a variety of situations.
In this essay
four major skills:
Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

Listening and Reading both are receptive skills.
Ø
Speaking and Writing both are productive skills.
In this essay also talked about four part of languages:
1.
First Language
(L1):Mother Tongue, Mother tongue is most potent and comprehensive
medium for the expression of the student’s entire personality. Mother tongue as
the proper medium of instruction for all classes up to the higher secondary
level.
2.
Second Language
(L2):Second language (English). English as a second language functions
primarily as an interstate or international link language.
3.
Foreign
Language (L3): Foreign language is to have direct access to the speakers
of these language and their cultures.
4.
Classical
Language: Classical language like Sanskrit provide access to ancient
culture, learning and philosophy of life and is assumed to contribute to the
intellectual enrichment of its learners.
This language is a “Window on the World”.This language is a science
and technology, commerce, political science, English is important for
industrial and economy development. English as the associate official language.
All the essay’s concept is a how to
learners learn teaching English as a language. Children should how to ask
question. Task, Freedom, give the stage and encourage them, and give the
motivation. Expression is very important for English language. Communication is
a bidirectional process.
