Thanking Speech

M.A. Part-1

19th Sept,2015

Good afternoon MandaliyaSir and DilipSir and all my dear

friends.

First of all we are very thankful to Mandaliyasir that he

spend very precious time for us and taught us. His way of

delivering speech is amazing, simple and outstanding.

His style of teaching is extra ordinary and we got many

fruitful ideas and thinkings from his lecture. One more

thing I want to say about his “Shakespearean style when

we saw him at that time we remember Shakespeare”.

In the John Donne's poetry class, we have learned so many

ideas, and he has recited line to line of each poetry , we

was very congenial understanding in our mind Donne's

poetry and I really delightful this class. He is very

emotional person. I also says about he is the greatest

personality on the Earth, the active most man.

On behalf of the Department of English thank you sir, for

coming here and sharing your views.

Thank You....

"The Namesake" By Jhumpa Lahiri

 The Namesake"

This novel written by Jhumpa Lahiri. Jhumpa Lahiri is consider as Indo-American writer, she says:

I wasn’t born here, but
I might as well have been”.

In 2003 Jhumpa Lahiri has published the first novel “The Namesake”. In this novel she has described the barrier because of name through the character of Gogol as Nikhil. The main theme of name and identity itself shows the importance of title. Jhumpa Lahiri’s deep knowledge of English poets like William Wordsworth, the Russian author like Nikolai Gogol.
It shows Jhumpa’s vast reading of various literature:

You can travel the world without move and it”.

Character list:

Ashoke Ganguli
Ashima Ganguli
Nikhil Ganguli
Gogol
Sonia Ganguli

In this title “Namesake” is very suggestive with regard to the main character Gogol Ganguli, whose good name is Nikhil and he swings between both the names as he does between two cultures American and Indian. Gogol is sandwiched between his dual identities and still has not authentic one. The journey of Gogol starts with this name and at the middle of this journey. He finds many obstacles in his path. The struggle for identity and that is why the title is very apt and meaningful.
Gogol Ganguli is the protagonist of the novel “The Namesake”. He is the son of Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli. He is the elder brother of Sonia. Gogol is his pet name while his good name is ‘Nikhil’. The title of the novel signifies the journey of Gogol to Nikhil. He is born in America, never visited India still he got young and that is why he believes himself as an American.

Ashoke: Gogol’s father, he suggest the name of his new born child Gogol. He choose this name for two reason:
First, Gogol is the name of his favorite author, the famous Russian author Nikolai Gogol.
Second reason is that before Ashoke was married he had survived very dangerous accident. When he was riding in train, the train had left the tracks. In this accident many people died while Ashoke had broken his back and could not move. But he was saved by this book ‘The short stories of Nikolai Gogol’ as he believes very firmly.

By listening to this Gogol stars hating his name and becomes impatient to change his name. He asks his parents also to change his name but Ashoke and Ashima are much habituated to his name and they do not prefer to change it. Gogol does not care about his parent’s emotion towards his name and Ashoke says him:
“In America anything is possible. Do as you wish”.

Gogol realizes that he is just an ABCD which means ‘American born confused Delhi’. And finally his change name to ‘Nikhil’. His journey as Nikhil:
  • His affairs with so many girls like: Kim, Ruth, Maxine, and Maushumi.
  • He himself as suffer.

To sum up one can say his life and he is swigged between two cultures. He has dual identity- ‘Americanized, Indian’. At last he realized the important of his father and the name given to him. He becomes mature in real sense.

Here, I share my view on "Waiting for Godo't".

Respected Sir,

1: "A country road, A Tree Evening" is the setting of both a play and these two paintings. Tree is very symbolic it leaves, means leaves as a hope. This two painting by Casper David Friedrich "Longing". In both are the setting of the play and painting can be connected with  "Waiting".

2: Tree is the important symbol in two acts we can see that in the first act tree is barren and we can not find any leaves on the tree, and the second act we find some leaves on the tree. Here, Tree is very symbolic it leaves means leaves as a "hope". Samuel Bucket connects with human life.

3:Both acts end when night fall and moon rising. Night gives hope that another day will come and something will happen.

4: In the movie version director showing debris it's like absurdity. "Waiting for Godo't" is an absurd drama in the concept of nothingness of life and nothingness of life.

5: The theme of the play is nothingness The play begins with the one dialogue "Nothing to be done",  word it also shows "Nothing" means "something". Other two characters are Vladimir and Estragon are waiting for something and they represent the title of the play.

6: Yes, I agree with the positivity of this play because they are waiting for something. Waiting is endless but nobody comes it shows something symbolically truth about life. We can say that in this play meaningless, nothingness, waiting as theme or center in play. Waiting is something as theme or center in the play. waiting is something positive thought and universe ideas in the play.

7: First frame camera focus on boots and hat. Symbol of hat and boot are represent in the play.
Hat - Vladimir and higher thinking.
Boot- Estragone and lower thinking.

8: Lucky is very obedient and the slavery of lucky to his master. Luckey's behaviour is unberable or untolrable. Lucky and Pozzo's character are relationship between master and slave.

9: According to my point of view Godo't is an object of God  two character: Vladimir and Estragon waiting for God. Both character are think about Godo't.

10:In this play waiting is main subject. Waiting is endless but nobody comes. It shows something symbolicaly truth about life. In this play only one action doing two character Vladimir and Estragone: “Waiting”. Here, in this play not any action, not only rising, climax, plot in the play.

11Waiting for Godo't is better to read and the simple language and short dialogue but all the dialogue give more understanding of lofe. While the reading time we cannot see perfect background so, both audio and visual help in better understanding of play.

12: I like most Pozzo and Lucky: both episode in both acts slave master relationship.

13: While watching in the play we can see Existence in the play. Central theme is Existentialism Existence in the end of the play because in the end no any come it is better to be Existence rather than waiting for someone.

14: Estragon talking about “Langing” theselves and commit suicide because fear of God in doing this they might commit sin it is their belief so again this thing and idea of sucide dealing with existentialism.

15: Pozzo and Lucky of slave master relationship because after second world war some political situation of England.

16: yes , by two characters Beckett created political satire on England Portrayed Pozzo as blind master so it is very hated towards political aspects they try to showing in directly in play.
